A lesbian couple from West Bengal recently celebrated their marriage in a traditional ceremony at a temple in Deoria district, Uttar Pradesh, marking a significant moment for LGBTQ visibility in India. Jayashree Rahul, 28, and Rakhi Das, 23, both originally from South 24 Parganas district, fell in love while working together in an orchestra based in Deoria.
The couple first secured a notarised affidavit to formalize their union legally. Their initial request to marry at the Dirgeshwarnath temple was denied by the temple’s head priest, who cited the absence of permission from district authorities. Undeterred, Jayashree and Rakhi, supported by their friends and well-wishers, found an alternative venue at the Bhagada Bhavani temple in Bhatpar Rani, where they exchanged garlands in the presence of the temple priest, symbolizing their commitment.
Their wedding not only celebrates their love but also challenges traditional norms, sending a message of inclusivity and acceptance. The couple shared that despite facing societal challenges, their bond has only grown stronger, reflecting hope for greater acceptance of diverse relationships in Indian society.
This ceremony highlights the evolving attitudes toward LGBTQ rights and the courage of individuals who choose to live authentically despite obstacles.
